Things: The name of this quilt is grandmas flower garden. Each hexagon piece of the flower cut and hand sewn together. Then sewn onto blocks with 1/2 triangles to form the diamond in the corners.

Thoughts and Things: Usually when I am driving, I listen to talk radio or just nothing at all. My recent trip to the store with my little granddaughter, Audrey (a.k.a. Ramona) was filled with singing. She is learning her ABC song in preschool. We sang together at first then she insisted on singing solo.

ABCDEFG... HIKKLNM ...OP... QRSTBU ...WXY and Z, now you know your ABC's next time won't you sing with me!

This little mini alphabet quilt was made from some left over squares from a different quilt. I free handed and cut the little letters out of wool felt and whip stitched onto a yellow cotton fabric, with a running stitch around each letter.

Thoughts and Things: After speaking to 4 technical support personnel and an hour on the phone, I finally mastered the ability to transfer my pictures from my phone to the computer. (and the salesman said it was so easy) I feel so proud.

My granddaughter, Hannah, said "You learn something new everyday grandma."

Yes you do Hannah, yes you do.

Here is a look at my sister pickles, our sewing day and some of their finished schnibbles.

Sandy K. used different colors than she usually does. Turned out adorable. Perfect for her kitchen table this spring and summer.

Deby just used scraps she had left over from other quilts! Beautiful

Thoughts and Things: If I only knew how to transfer my pictures from my cell phone to my computer, I would show you the fruits of our labors from our pickles sewing day. Most of my sister pickles finished their schnibbles, with the others very close behind. Everyone did beautiful work. I, on the other hand, sewed the first 10 blocks wrong. Yes, my unpicker is a valuable tool in my sewing basket!

Prepared for Pickles

Tomorrow my "Pickles" quilt group is coming to my home for our January all day sew day.

The pattern has been chosen, fabric purchased and precisely cut. Ready for hours of sewing.

I can't think of anything better to do on a stormy day.

Let's Eat!

Thoughts: A question that I always seem to ask my hubby is ,"What do you want for dinner? His response is usually the same. "Just make something easy." I wish sometimes he could be a little more specific.

Tonight's dinner menu was canned soup and fresh french bread, made by my friend Jane.

Luckily Jane was nice enough to share her wonderful talent with us, otherwise I would have made grilled cheese sandwiches made out of white bread from the grocery store.

After we were finished eating my hubby said to me, "Thank you for my delicious dinner." Really, Seriously! I am not sure how I felt, guilty or happy. Here's the thing... he has said that to me every night after dinner for as long as I can remember. On a few occasions, he has said that even when he makes the meal!

Prime rib (very seldom) or canned soup (all too often), he is always nice enough to thank me.

Things: For Christmas this year my crafty daughter-in-law, Tiffy, made me this cute picture for my kitchen. Made from utensils bought from the thrift store, fabric for the background, and a can of red spray paint. I love it!

Little Charlie

My grandson, little Charlie, had a rough week. He lost his best friend, comforter, and companion. His beloved binkie. His older brother took it upon himself to cut the end of it off. Could it be possible that he heard his grandma and mom talking about that very thing? It was the last binkie they had, and it really was time.

Charlie...Binkie...Now! has been an all too frequent phrase said by him, even though he sounded too cute when he said it.

After a week of crying, fussing, whimpering and some restless nights he has become a big boy now.

A hearty congratulations to his mom Tiffy...YOU DID IT!

Thoughts and Things: The month of January always finds me reflecting on the abundance of blessings received the previous year, and, with hopes that the coming 12 months will be filled with more of the same. The abundance of good things seem to make lifes challenges much easier to deal with.

Along with the thoughts of my abundance of blessings, January seems to always be the month that I realize the abundance of stuff in my home. It happens every year.

My dish cabinet needs to be cleaned out, dusted and rearranged. It's like asking a child to give away some of their favorite toys!

"There are children in the world without toys" Isn't that what our moms said and we as moms have said too!?

Someone in the world could use some of my dishes.

Sunday Sewing

Thoughts and Things: I have heard it said many times before that for each stitch you sew on sunday you will have to unpick with your nose in heaven.

My little neice turned 4 yesterday. To help celebrate, the family was invited over to her home for cake and ice cream and to join voices together to sing "Happy Birthday."

Could I go to her little party empty handed? Heavens no, she's 4! That's where the sunday sewing comes in. I had this little scotty dog pattern on my sewing table with the intentions of making it for my daughter for christmas. I know Kate likes dogs, she has 2 real ones that are part of her family, so to work I went, sewing on sunday.

My nose is long with a ball on the end, it should do a fine job unpicking.

It will free up my hands while they are sewing.

Christmas Memories

Thoughts and Things: I remember the year I got my Barbie and Ken for christmas. I wanted the platinum blonde barbie with light blue eye shadow and frosted white lipstick more than anything. To get Ken too, well, it was the best christmas ever!

My mom made the red dress she is wearing.

The two lay side by side in my night stand all year. At christmas time I like to get them out to add to my decorations. They bring back such good memories.

Barbies hair has discolored, her neck is starting to split, and her dress is a little dusty. (sounds a little like her owner). Ken has aged nicely (typical man).

Thoughts: I'd like to have a pair of long johns like Santa, to keep me warm on a long winters night.

Things: These little Santa long johns are made out of wool felt. A little slit under the backside flap makes a perfect place to stuff with some delicious christmas candy.

THE STAR

Thoughts: A star shines brightly on the mountain side every night through the christmas season in our little K-town.

Last night I laid in my bed, tired from a day full of watching my grandchildren, sewing final touches on gifts and a christmas concert with good friends. I looked out my window and noticed that star glowing in the darkness of night. A perfect way to end a good day. Falling asleep with the thoughts of the baby Jesus and the reason for this Christmas season.

Things: My mini nativity set is my favorite christmas decoration. Displayed under glass, with a BIG invisible sign that says to the 6 sets of little curious fingers, " DON'T TOUCH"

Do the Math Thoughts and Things: Math was not one of my best subjects in school. After fractions I was lost...but I do know that 4 quarters make a whole.

With a total of 396 pieces cut, pinned and sewn together, this modern spin on a double wedding ring quilt is finally taking shape. Just 11 more "wholes" to make. It will be twin size.

Made using vintage reproduction scraps (know as 30's)and Kona Snow for the backgroung pieces.

Words to live by Thoughts: After my grandma passed away, my dad found this small handwritten note used as a book mark in one of her books. I asked him if I could have it, and as fathers do, they give their children what they want. It is such a treasured keepsake for me. It reminds me of the person that my grandma was and how I need to be.

Good words to live by.

The Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay.

Always a mother

Thoughts: Over the past week or so my mothering skills have taken a hit, actually, feels more like a blow.

In my attempt to show care, concern, love and helpfulness, it has translated into being intrusive, meddling, judgemental.

Raising adult children can be challenging... (note to self: You have already had your chance)

Two things I do know... 1.I will try harder to be a better mother 2.I will always be here for them, no matter what.

A Sticky Situation

I was weeding the few strawberry plants I have today, checking to see if they might be producing some fruit, when I received a phone call.

It was my daughter-in-law, telling me that they were loading the kids in the van and heading to the emergency room. I could hardly hear her what she was saying because of my grandson crying, or should I say HOWLING!

He had just glued his eye shut with gorilla glue, yes, you read it right, he glued his eye shut with gorilla glue! He and his twin sister thought that hiding behind the couch and using the glue as eye drops would be something new to try..

This happened around noon today, it is now 9:00 p.m. and his eye is still glued shut.

The doctor said to put the ointment on every hour and hopefully within 24 hours it would open... WHAT!

Logan doesn't seem to be too effected by it. Last week, he unscrewed his training wheels and taught himself how to ride a 2 wheel bike. Today, he can ride just as fast with one eye glued shut!

Monday Quilt Day Thoughts and Things: As I was finishing the binding on this quilt I noticed a mistake I had made while sewing the pattern. It was not surprising to me, as I usually make more than one mistake in every quilt.

"Where's Waldo", "Find the hidden objects in the picture",and "What's wrong with this picture" where games I remember my children liked to do.

On the Road Thoughts: My sister and I are heading off on our first road trip together.

The Farm Chicks antique show in Spokane Washington is our final destination.

We are leaving the hubby's home to man the fort.

Be it rain or shine, we plan on having a great time together, making memories and finding a few trinkets along the way.

Bananaberry Muffins

Things: My Hubby is quite independent when it comes to cooking. He wants to buy and prepare his own food while I am gone. I thought the least I could do is bake him some muffins.

2 cups flour

2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup sugar

1/3 cup butter - room temperature

2 eggs

1 cup mashed bananas ( about 2 bananas)

1 tsp. vanilla

1 cup fresh blueberries ( washed and patted dry)

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together.

Add eggs, butter, bananas and vanilla.

Mix together

Fold in blueberries

Cook at 350 for approximately 20 minutes

(my oven took a little longer)

How does your garden grow?

Thoughts: I have been inspired by and taught many gardening tips from my friend Kristy. She has a spectacular yard. Her neighbor next door has an equally beautiful yard. The have planted a row of espaliar fruit trees that have formed a living fence between their properties.

Things: Training espaliar trees was a technique popular in the middle ages in Europe to produce fruit inside the walls of a typical castles courtyard without interfering with the open space and to decorate walls. They are trained to grow flattened out. They are also perfect along a fence. They are smaller fruit trees yet still bear fruit.

I have planted 2, they are both apple. A cherry espalier tree is on my wish list for this summer...

Lost and FoundThoughts and Things: As I was driving through my neighborhood recently, I noticed a new handwritten sign duct taped to a post. Then I noticed another and another. I began driving around in amusement just so see how many signs there were! In a 3 block radius I estimated about 20 signs posted on every stop sign, every street address sign and every other sign! Someone wanted us all to know they had lost their turtle! 2 questions came to my mind.

1. How do you lose a turtle?

2. How far can it really get?

FOUND!
I found the little turtle, although in an awkward position. I flipped him over, and pointed him in the direction of his home.

He'll eventually get there.
Sooner or later...

In celebration of his discovery, let's all have a cookie.

Monday Quilt Day

A Tribute to Mrs. Wiggles Thoughts and Things: Years ago I was browsing through an antique store in the town that I live in. I noticed a stack of fabric sitting on a table tied loosley with string. Looking closer I discovered it to be old quilt blocks. The shop owner said that the family of Mrs. Wiggles had just brought in several pieces of their mothers estate. She had recently passed away and her children were cleaning out her home and her possessions. I snatched up the quilt blocks excited about my newly discovered find. Yet, I felt sad, sad for Mrs Wiggles. How could her family so easily give up such a treasure? Something so beautifully done by their mother!

Each quilt block was sewn from different scraps of fabric. I know each scrap had a story to tell. One piece from an old dress, one from old curtains, another from outgrown childrens clothes.

In a way I feel honored to have Mrs. Wiggles quilt blocks. I sewed them together and had it machine quilted. This special quilt hangs on the back on my chair in my bedroom.

Chicken Dinner

Thoughts: My thoughts are with my hubby, anxious for him to return home from being out of town. One thing I know is that he will be hungry. So "Chicken Alfredo Pasta Bake" for dinner it is! Thought I would pass the recipe along to you.

I should whip up some oatmeal, walnut, raisin cookies too, they're his favorites!

Things: Chicken Alfredo Pasta Bake

Sauce: 1 pint cream

1 stick butter

1/2 square cream cheese

1 bag of fresh parmesan cheese

1 Tlbs. garlic salt
pepper

Add ingredients together. Slowly add parmesan cheese until it melts.

Stir and simmer sauce. You may need to add a small amount of milk to thin.

Cook chicken and chop

I roast chicken tenders with a little olive oil and salt and pepper on a cookie sheet in the oven for about 20 minutes at 375 . (nice and moist)

1 box penne pasta cooked and drained

Combine noodles, chicken and sauce.

Pour into casserole dish

Top with monterey jack cheese, diced tomatoes , green onions and muchrooms (optional)

cook at 350 just until bubbling

At the end I will turn on the broiler for just a minute to brown up the cheese on top.

May Showers

Thoughts and Things: I have had a wedding shower for my neice and a baby shower for another neice the past couple of weeks. It is always fun to be together with family and friend to celebrate these special occasions.

My snowball bush provided the flowers. The blossoms are a beautiful green before they turn white. The green blossoms are my favorite.

Mini donuts , carrot cake and chocolate cake were served.

I used my bucket of animals to help decorate.

Monday Quilt Day Thoughts and Things: We have all heard the saying:

"When life hands you scraps make quilts."

Well, how about, "When your cupboard is stuffed and overflowing with scraps make quilts." That definitely sounds easier.

I have always wanted to do a dresden plate quilt but wasn't sure how. I found this nifty ruler that makes it fairly easy to do, so I am up for the challenge and will give it a try.

Four of these units make a circle. The circle middle is then sewn in, not sure what that will be yet. I hope to have it done by the "Pickles Quilt Show" in August.

It's Enough

Thoughts and Things: I was a stay at home mom to my 3 kids with an occasional part time job thrown in. Now I guess I can call myself a stay at home grandma.

Tucked away in the back of my mind has always been the thought of have I done enough, given enough, been enough, not really ever knowing what enough is.

Today I apprehensively ventured out with my little grandaughter. Just a quick trip to the grocery store for hamburger buns, a stop by the fabric store, and to the cleaners. Exhausting is the word that comes to mind!

That was enough!

Raising children is enough!

Nap time

Thoughts and Things: I am quickly remembering how much mothers love naptime.

When my children were young, naptime to me was precious time.

Time to clean up, catch up or maybe just some me time.

My granddaughter has just gone down for her nap. I planned to finish this garland that I am working on for a wedding shower at my home next week...

instead, I think I'll have a nap too.

Sewing NeighborsThings: Our neighborhood has started a quilting group.

There are beginners to veteran sewers and some in between.

We meet together once a month to learn, to get the next months pattern and to show the block that we have made. Each person chooses their own fabric.

Our quilt project is a block of the month for a year.

Monday Quilt DayThoughts and Things: My Pickles quilt group met a few weeks ago. Holly, my sister pickle was our hostess. She picked this quilt pattern for us. It measures 40 x 40. Perfect for a table topper or wall hanging.

We had a great time. We always love to be together. The food was delicious too!

We have decided that this is the last new quilt we will make together for a few months. Our goal is to try to finish up any unfinished projects, so we can have everything ready for our quilt show this summer.

My quilt top is finished and ready to be sent to get machine quilted.

Thoughts: Every night just before I crawl into bed, I look out my bedroom window.

I wonder who's still awake and who has gone to sleep.

I wonder if my neighbors know how glad I am to live among them.

I wonder if they know I feel safe because of them.

I wonder if they know that I would not want to live anywhere else, because of them.

Thoughts and Things: It's a tomato (even though is looks more like a beach ball) made from fabric and wool felt. The green top made from wool.

What's for dinner?

Thoughts and Things: The question, "Whats for dinner?" pops into my head every morning.

It's really annoying.

I can stand in front of the open frig and still don't have an answer!

Is it possible to create something out of whipped cream in a can, a half eaten package of girl scout cookies, a leftover chocolate easter egg, old spaghetti sauce and some jello and fruit cups?

My list of errands today now includes a trip to the grocery store.

Strawberry Surprise Thoughts: With strawberries now plentiful in the stores, I am ready indulge in my favorite fruit.

Strawberries and waffles

Peanut butter and homemade strawberry jam sandwich

Strawberry wonton salad

chocolate covered strawberries

strawberry shortcake

strawberrries with brown sugar and sour cream

dehydrated strawberries for snacking

Things: Handmade strawberries to celebrate the season. The strawberry, green leaf and top, and white blossom are all made from wool felt. French knots filled the blossom center. 2 strands of light yellow floss made the seeds.

Closet Secrets
Thoughts: I can just imagine what my children will say after I have died and gone to heaven and they have the awful job of cleaning out my stuff...

"Does anyone want any of this?"

"Bring in the dumpster!"

"What was she thinking?"

Things: I am adding one more pillow to the cupboard. Once again I saw this pillow in a magazine and thought I would make my own version. It is made from wool. Any flower shape will work. The flower center is whip stitched on. I also did a round running stitch inside the flower. Turquoise ric-rac to trim the edge and backed with red wool.

For Memory Sake
Thoughts and Things: I shared a bedroom with my sister when I was young. We slept in a full bed for awhile. A fight for the covers seemed to be a nightly occurance. Eventually we got twin beds. One memory I have of my bedroom was that on saturdays my mother would pull out the electric buffer and buff our wood floor, which made them slippery enough for my sister and I to have fun sliding on.

Through the years, I don't remember much of how my bedrooms looked.

For my grandchildren, I will record through photos their precious bedrooms.

Just for memory sake.

Bunny Pins Thoughts: As a child I loved easter time. A basket of candy, an easter egg hunt and a new dress. I was so excited to wear my new easter dress to church. If I got a little white pair of gloves and a purse to match, well, that really made the occasion special. Oh, and the white shoes! I tried my hardest not to get that first black scuff mark on them. I never liked the spring bonnets though, especially the tight elastic under my chin.

I still love easter, and the spring season that it brings. Seeing all the little girls come to church with their easter dresses brings back so many memories of my childlhood and also of my own two girls.

Things: I made these little bunny pins for my granddaughters. They each have a little cardigan to go with their outfits and I thought these would add an easter touch.

They are made from wool, stuffed just a little and hand sewn on the outside with a whip stitch. A french knot for the eye, small ric- rac around the neck, with a little wool flower and bead hot glued on.

Monday Quilt DayThoughts and Things: This bunny quilt pattern is a good size for baby, table topper or wall hanging. The bunnies are needle turn applique. The large pattern pieces are a great way to learn to needle turn.

My version...

Thoughts: Every month I receive in the mail a magazine full of adorable childrens clothing. I dog ear the pages of what I like best, invisioning how cute my grandchildren will look. Then reality sets back in...

I take the price and times it by 6.

It was fun dreaming.

Things: I bought this T-shirt at Target and made my own version of what was in the magazine.

Cut out shapes, backed them with wonder-under and then ironed in place. With a small zig-zag I used invisible thread and sewed around each piece.

... added some embroidered wiskers

Ready for play, ketcup stains, dirt, and lots of washing. By seasons end, even a few holes.

Let them eat cake!

Thoughts: My grandma C. made the best desserts. We always looked forward to her tasty treats when we would visit on sunday afternoon.

Most sundays my parents come to dinner at my home. This past sunday I thought I would make for my dad one of his mother's delicious desserts. Applesauce cake with penuche frosting. It was yummy, but the best part were the fond memories that we shared about Grandma C.

Things: Applesauce Cake

2 cups flour, sifted before measuring

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

2 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup raisins, optional

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, optional

1/2 cup melted butter

2 cups applesauce

Directions for applesauce cake: In a mixing bowl, sift together the dry ingredients. Add raisins, chopped nuts, melted butter, and applesauce. Beat until well blended. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 13 baking pan. Bake at 350 for 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool before frosting. This cake also makes a delicious snack cake without the frosting.

Penuche Frosting

1/2 cup buter

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup milk

2 cups powdered sugar, more of less

In a sauce pan, melt 1/2 cup butter. Add the brown sugar. Bring to boil and lower the heat to medium low and continue to boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the milk and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cool to lukewarm. Gradually add powdered sugar. Beat until thick enough to speard. If too thick, add a little hot water. Frost cake. Eat!

Eve was a good womanThoughts: I have sat at this computer for 2 hours contemplating or should I say, totally stumped on how I will present the sunday Relief Society lesson.

The Fall of Mankind -

I have decided to focus on Eve.

I hope by sharing and discussing her wonderful attributes as a woman, we will all recognize those same things in ourselves.

"Our glorious mother Eve" was a child of God and the epitome of eternal motherhood - wisely descerning, willing to sacrifice, industrious, prayerful, receptive and obedient, compassionate and concerned for her children, and a great educator.

Such a "glorious" and noble personality is an abiding example for all women.

Breakfast in Bed

Hannah spent the night at grandma's house on tuesday. Grandpa was out of town. It was a school night so no staying up late. She had a bath, ate girl scout thin mint cookies for a snack, watched the bachelor wedding with grandma, (don't tell her mom) read her homework book to grandma and then went to bed.

Hannah was awake at 6:40 the next morning. Way to early for grandma. She cuddled in bed for a minute and then asked if she could get a paper and pencil. Grandma told her to get it from her sewing room and then dozed off. Shortly there after, Hannah came into grandma's bedroom with a delicious breakfast. A bowl of cheerios with half & half on it, LOTS on it. 3 frozen strawberries, with the tops trimmed and a cup of juice. All teetering on a dinner plate. There was a note nicely folded too. Hannah said that this was the way that old fashioned people wrote and folded their notes. (Oh, the computer age that these kids live in!)

It was the best start to Grandma's morning, it made her so happy! Breakfast in bed, and a very nice note by one of her favorite granddaughters!

taken back home, just in time to go to school.

Mother Bird

Thoughts: A mother bird must give her babies undivided attention in order for her little ones to survive.

Every daylight hour is filled with repeated trips to fill her bill so that she can nourish her fast growing nestlings.

Each baby receives 35 to 40 feedings a day, keeping mother bird busy until near exhaustion morning to night.

Baby birds are so demanding that 90 percent of bird species require efforts of two parents to successfully feed and raise their young.

Every mother of young children has her hands full, just like a mother bird.

My daughter and daughter-in-law are the best little mother birds I know.

I watch in amazement as they feed, nurture and love their little nestlings.

They work from morning until night to make the best home and be the best mother they can be.

With two good husbands always there to help.

It makes this old bird tired just watching.

My grandchildren are blessed and so am I.

Monday Quilt Day

Thoughts and things: My sewing room closet has been in desperate need of a good cleaning and organizing.

Unfinished projects a plenty were found.

This "Aunt Gracie" fabrics quilt was started a few years ago and needed to be finished up.

The quilt top is pieced and sewn together, ready to be sent to the machine quilter.
